Easy to digest, highly nutritious

When the body's immune system is out of balance it directs most of its energy into fighting off whatever condition it is to bring the body back to normal functions. One of the major symptoms many experience is a suppressed appetite. There is little energy to divert to digest, therefore providing food options that are highly nutritious and easy to digest becomes key.

What does easily digested and absorbed mean?

Foods that are low in insoluble fibre. Fibre is great in aiding bowel elimination, however it also slows down the absorption of nutrients and creates extra effort on the gastro intestinal system. It is ideal to prepare foods by steaming, stewing, broth or juiced to reduce the fibre present in raw food. Choosing fresh, organic, local foods when possible will ensure the food consumed is nutrient dense.

During flare ups increase soluble fibre
- forms a gel when mixed with liquid to be excreted
- prolong stomach emptying

Examples of foods with high soluble fibre content:
Oats
Brown rice
Quinoa
Black beans
Pinto beans
Edamame
Tofu
Plantain
Artichoke
Avocado
Brussel Sprouts
Sweet Potato
Asparagus
Brocolli
Green peas
Winter Squash
Onions
Banana
Dried figs
Blackberries
Grapefruit
flaxseed

During flare up reduce and avoid insoluble fibre in meals
-goes through the body intact
-helps with constipation

Examples of food with high insoluble fibre:
Okra
Whole grains
Millet
Popcorn
Lentils
Chickpeas
Almonds
Sesame seeds
Walnuts
Spinach
Kale
Tomato
